1. DEAD BATTERY

One of the most common problems why your car won’t start is due to a dead battery. The cars battery can drain due to many reasons such as leaving the headlights on while you are parked.

Other reasons such as a loose wire or the evaporation of water inside the component can cause poor conductivity.

One way of identifying if the battery is dead is to use jump leads to start the car. If jump starting the car works then you know the battery is dead.

2. FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH

If you car won’t start after a few turns then there may be a fault with the ignition switch.

If you car starts but then suddenly stalls this can happen due to a ignition fault also. This happens when the ignition fails in the “on” position as this is meant to power the fuel and ignition system.

3. BROKEN STARTER

The starter is the force that turns on the engine. If it is broken or faulty it will not turn on the engine resulting in the car not starting.

If you hear a clicking noise when trying to start your car there is definitely a problem with a broken or weakened starter.

4. FUEL FILTER

To ensure that petrol/diesel reaches the engine the fuel filter must be clean and free from debris. Generally filters should be changed every 10,000 – 15,000 miles. If the filters become clogged your car will not start.

5. SECURITY SYSTEM COMPROMISE

Generally most cars today come with a immobiliser or a security system. These enable the car to start when the key is inserted. The ignition key and the car key have a chip which match. When you insert the key and the codes match the security light will switch on and then turn off automatically.

In the event that the light does not switch off after a few minutes this may indicate there is a problem with the cars security system. This results in the car not starting.

6. EMPTY FUEL TANK

This may seem like an obvious problem but in some cases if you have been driving long distances and haven’t stopped to refuel, an empty fuel tank can result in your car not starting.
